BAJURA: Police have become active in the campaign to curb child marriages in Bajura district with the increase in such cases.
According to District Police Office (DPO), Bajura, police have been going from village to village to prevent child marriage from taking place and simultaneously have been spreading awareness against the social ill amongst the locals.
Anil Kumar Kaila (24) and Chhanta Kaila (22), both from Swamikartik Rural Municipality-4, tried to elope with two 17-year old girls from Pandusain in Budhinanda Municipality-8, in the district.
However, police from Budhinanda Municipality-1 intercepted them on their way and handed them over to their families, informed Chief of the DPO, Deputy Superintendent of Police Uddhav Singh Bhaat.

Likewise, on March 30, Rohit Sunar (17) of Badimalika Municipality-8 tried to get married to a 15-year-old girl from the same municipality. They were taken under control by the police from Ritha Bazaar of Budhiganga Municipality while they were trying to leave the district. Later, they were handed over to their relatives, said police.
Bajura Police have also taken under control other minors from outside Bajura who were passing through the district after getting married and have handed them over to their kin.
With the increasing cases of child marriage in Bajura, police started the campaign to curb the trend with the support of locals, civil society and media, shared central member of the Association of Non-government Organisations, Kashi BK.
Police in the district have been active not only in preventing child marriages but also in controlling other social ill practices such as gambling, alcoholism, among others.
