Bollywood’s most successful filmmaker, Rohit Shetty turned 46 on Thursday. He became the first Hindi film director – and also the first Indian film director – to have delivered eight back-to-back Rs 100 crore films after the worldwide success of his masala entertainer, Simmba, starring Ranveer Singh. Shetty’s films are known for their mass appeal – Simmba producer Karan Johar in a recent tweet called him the ‘masala maverick’ – and for combining several popular genres. Simmba is a spin-off of his popular Singham series of films, that starred Ajay Devgn as a tough cop. He will expand his universe with next year’s Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar, and a possible fourth film, featuring a female lead. He has said in the past that the end goal would be to make an Avengers-style team-up film in which all these characters unite.Singham isn’t the only franchise Shetty has spawned – his most popular remains the Golmaal franchise, whose most recent installment was also the most successful at the box office.
