Decomposed remains of 14 babies and foetuses were found wrapped in plastic near south Kolkata on Sunday afternoon.
The remains were found in Haridebpur area in Kolkata’s southern outskirts when workers were cleaning a plot of land a real estate company had recently purchased.
“The 14 bodies, wrapped separately in plastic, were in two bags. A thorough search of the entire areas, including nearby waterbodies, will be conducted to see if there are more bodies,” said Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee. “It appears the bodies were soaked in chemicals,” he said.
“Some abortion racket operating nearby could be behind it,” news agency PTI quoted a senior police officer as saying.
“We have no clue where from they (the bodies) have come. Going by circumstantial evidences, it seems that they were dumped there as the land was lying abandoned,” the officer said.
Mayor Chatterjee and police commissioner Rajeev Kumar rushed to the spot after news broke about the bodies.
